The Modernaire

The Modernaire are a Manchester based trio comprising of Cruella De Mill, Oscar Wildstyle and Chesty La Rue (I'm thinking that ain't their real names). They make music that is multi-purpose. Menacing synths and surging beats are contrasted by wispy vocals and anodyne harmonies, making their sound as suitable for dance floor as it would for a bedtime lullaby. Electro-be-bop anyone? Having played with the likes of The Whip, Ratatat and The Ting Tings (whom I believe requested their support), the band have now released their second extended player, 'Velvet Never Dries' on independent label Jackdaw Recordings. You like? You BUY.

Electro Tektonik

Check out this nice little documentary, featured on Current TV, in which some UK comedian (who I sure as hell never heard of) heads to Paris to investigate the dancing/fashion youth culture phenomenon known as 'Electro' or 'Tektonik'.

Getset, Go!!!

Here's one for the diary. Saturday 2ND August will see Getset, Go take over The Magnet (Hardman Street, Liverpool). From what I can gather, if you're after a night of skulking in the shadows looking cool while the DJ spins pretentiously dull B sides, this night may not be for you. What can be assured is a disco playing an assortment of indie, soul, punk, house, hip-hop, techno, electro and funk, following the performance of two expertly selected local bands: Dirtblonde (who I'll be dammed if I can find a Myspace page for) and Emily And The Faves, of whom I am genuinely impressed by. Entry's 2 squid with flyer.

The New Sins

The New Sins are the collaborative effort of Nick Phillips and Louise Hayter. Hayter, you may or may not know, is NYPC's keyboard player which, I guess makes this a 'side project'. Anyway, The New Sins produce dreamy electro-pop; kind of sedentary but with enough bounce to puncture pre/post party conversations. Yes they're no fun, but there's enough of that elsewhere. And anyway, their in need of shaking that Ellis-Bextor comparison they've picked up...damn you NME!!!

The Joy Formidable

Are The Joy Formidable Cool? Yes, of course. Not only do the London based trio (by way of Wales and Manchester) have a strong affection for dream-pop/indie and falsetto vocals (music has been lacking), they're also willing to take on the increasingly impersonal world of music promotion, mailing me the official video to upcoming 7", Austere (released August 18Th, if you're interested, which you are) together with a badge and a hand written note. Yeah I know, hand written!!! I'd love for this trend to continue, but I'm wary of dishing out my home address to all and sundry. And by all and sundry, I mean label lawyers and letter bombers.

teenagersintokyo

"You seriously just discovered teenagersintokyo?!". Alas yes, today was the day my ears caught a whiff of this fashionably clad Sydney based quintet. Having just signed a deal with UK label Backyard Recordings, I predict these guys are heading in the same direction as New Young Pony Club. All's their missing is a Van She Tech remix and a slot on a sexy mobile phone advert. Can't help thinking they sound a little...no, a lot...like the now deceased The Organ, no?

As per the norm, Ohh! Crapp has already interviewed them.

Haunts

Men pampering themselves with moisturisers. The Labour Party embracing the free market. And now Indie bands turning all dance in this ever homogenising world in which we live. There was once a time when the two concepts were seen as polar opposites. These days, it's not uncommon to find a band with its own in house remixing wing, al la Van She, Cut Copy...and Haunts.

On the one hand, the London based foursome deliver murky, blustering punk-funk which I find surprisingly danceable. While elsewhere, they produce bass heavy dance remixes, with nods in the direction of their 80's influences. They aptly describe it as "like Haunts with synths".

If you happen to have a ticket for T in the Park (that's Scotland, Americans!) this weekend, you'll be glad to hear they're playing the Friday on the Relentless stage. Go cut a rug and give them my regards.

Hearts On Fire Remixes

It seems that In Ghost Colours highlight, Hearts On Fire is rapidly turning into this years D.A.N.C.E. On the plus side there's always at least one great remix in the pile, but at the same time it can become a bit of a shitter as I invariably end up hating the original. This presents me with something of a conundrum. Do I jump of the bandwagon and get trigger happy with these remixes, or do I hold fire to help maintain the integrity of the original...inflation leads to devaluation n'all that.

Guess I have to head somewhere in the middle. That's what blogging's all about these days innit, perpetuating the hype. I want in.
